[For Beginners] What Is "3D Secure (Strong Customer Authentication)" for Credit Cards? Explaining How to Fix Payment Errors and Set It Up
3D Secure is an identity authentication service provided by credit card issuing banks, designed as a security feature to prevent unauthorized card use and fraudulent transactions by third parties.
The older 3D Secure 1.0 typically required customers to enter a password at checkout, while the current mainstream 3D Secure 2.0 (EMV 3-D Secure) assesses the risk of each transaction to decide whether additional authentication is needed, making payments smoother. When a transaction is flagged as high-risk, identity verification is carried out via a one-time password, app authentication, or similar methods.
In Europe, under the PSD2 regulation, online payments generally require Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), and 3D Secure 2.0 is one of the main ways to comply with this requirement.
If you run into issues such as "I entered my card details correctly but still got an error" or "I can't get past the authentication screen," the main causes are usually the four below. Please try the solution that matches your situation.
Even if you are currently using your card, if you have not previously registered for 3D Secure (identity authentication) or set up a one-time password on your bank's website or app, your payment will be blocked.
Solution: Log in to your issuing bank's online banking or mobile app (e.g., Revolut, N26, ING, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, Santander, Bunq, etc.) and complete the 3D Secure (Strong Customer Authentication, SCA) registration and password setup. Most European banks will automatically guide you through this setup the first time you make an online payment. If you don't receive any prompt, go to the "Security" or "Online Payments" section in your banking app and enable it manually.
One-time passwords sent via SMS or app have a validity period of several minutes (usually 5–10 minutes). If you enter it after it has expired, or press the wrong digits, an error will occur.
Solution: Check that you have received the latest one-time password and enter it within the validity period. If you don't receive it, please check that the mobile phone number registered with your bank is correct.
The 3D Secure authentication screen may open in a separate window (pop-up). If pop-ups are blocked by your browser's security settings, the screen may stay blank and you may not be able to proceed.
Solutions:
• Change your browser settings to "allow pop-ups."
• Turn off incognito mode (private browsing).
• If you are using Safari, try switching to another mainstream browser such as Chrome.
When you try to pay for a high-value purchase or in an unusual environment (such as late at night or at a shop you are using for the first time), your bank's fraud detection system may activate and temporarily block the transaction.
Solution: Call the phone number on the back of your card (customer support) and explain that "I tried to make a purchase at [shop name] but the payment was blocked," and ask them to lift the security restriction.
An overview of the 3D Secure registration and authentication steps for each card brand is as follows.
Visa (Visa Secure): Set the one-time password notification method (SMS/email) through your issuing bank's online banking or mobile app. Most European banks will automatically guide you through this setup the first time you make an online payment.
Mastercard (Mastercard Identity Check): Set your identity authentication password in advance on your issuing bank's website, or register the dedicated app (biometric authentication). Some banks enable it automatically within their app.
American Express (American Express SafeKey®): No prior registration required. At checkout, enter the one-time code automatically sent to the email address or phone number registered with Amex.
*Depending on your issuing bank, the layout of the authentication screen and the setup steps may differ. For details, please check your bank's support page.
